Don Schumacher Racing’s Matt Hagan led his team to victory this past weekend at the fourth annual Dollar General NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Charlotte, North Carolina. Hagan manned the ‘Magneti Marelli Quality Auto Parts Offered by Mopar’ Dodge Charger R/T, outdriving his competitors and earning his first title of the season and his sixth career Funny Car victory with Don Schumacher Racing.
Hagan managed to run three consistent 4.0-second passes with his first quad match resulting in a 4.057 second elapsed time. In the second round, Hagan was up against Mopar teammate Jack Beckman and ran a time of 4.071 seconds, once again quicker than his competition.
In the incredible final round, Hagan pulled off a 4.075-second time to shatter his rivals and advance to lead the Funny Car Championship by 50 points.
"This was a big win for us,” Hagan said in a statement after his victory. “It’s been a year since we won, or longer. It’s been too long, and that feeling is just great to have back. Obviously we don't want this to go away."
During the weekend’s racing, there was a bizarre incident where the body of competitor Robert Hight’s car flew off during a run. The body ended up in a spectator area, where two people were injured. Thankfully no one was seriously hurt.
