It was anticipated that base model 2013 SRT Viper sales would trump those of its more expensive, more luxurious GTS counterpart. After all, previous Viper models have retained a following despite (or perhaps because of) their pretty basic interior styling and overall raw nature. But as SRT has quickly learned, that assumption couldn’t have been further from the truth. According to a recent report from WardsAuto, a whopping 90 percent of 2013 SRT Vipers sold to date have been that of the GTS type.

While all 2013 Vipers possess the same 640 horsepower 8.4 liter V-10 power plant and 6-speed manual transmission, there are a number of distinctions that make the over-$20,000 price difference for the GTS plausible.

The base model is just that -- basic. It forgoes a rearview camera and Viper floor mats. While it comes equipped with an 8.4-inch touch screen, navigation is available but not standard. It also lacks leather seats and only boasts a nine-speaker sound system rather than the 12-speaker system standard in the GTS. Performance-wise, the base model’s suspension and stability control systems are surpassed by those in the GTS model as well.

The GTS on the other hand features a leather interior, an upgraded hood, and red brake calipers as opposed to the base model’s black version. The GTS also gets a two-mode suspension system with Bilstein DampTronic Select shock absorbers. Noise, vibration, and harshness are dampened through reduction treatments, giving the GTS a more comfortable gait.

"The GTS responds to a lot of those inputs from people who say, ‘I’ve had a basic Viper and that’s cool, and I really want one that’s more like a Ferrari inside,’” SRT engineer Graham Henckel told WardsAuto

While SRT has made serious headway in pushing the Viper to a new level of luxury, it will throw the Viper into reverse in 2014 with the release of the upcoming Viper TA, which is built for track use and void of comforts like leather seats and sound system.

The price to own one of these incredible vehicles? A GTS will set you back approximately $122,390, while the base model sells for $99,380. The TA will fall between the two with a price tag of about $120,500.
