The Chrysler/FIAT deal is on hold, per the Supreme Court of the United States.
Bloomberg News reported late this afternoon that the nation’s highest court stayed the asset sale Chrysler LLC planned to make as soon as 4 p.m. today (Eastern Time) to a group led by FIAT Sp.A. Thomas Lauria, a lawyer for several Indiana state pension funds who filed the appeal, told Bloomberg that The Supreme Court was reviewing a decision upholding the sale by a bankruptcy judge and a federal appeals court.
The deal would have FIAT acquire a 20% stake in the “new” Chrysler, gain access to Chrysler’s U.S. dealer network and supply Chrysler with small-car technology.
Meanwhile, FIAT CEO Sergio Marchionne insulted V-8 owners and Mopar performance lovers in late May when he told The Canadian Press, “You just cannot afford to go around with 5.7-litre V8s - you don't need them."
Marchionne was quoted following a late-may speech in Montreal, and a tour of Chrysler Canada’s Brampton and Windsor (Ontario) Assembly Plants, and a Toronto parts plant. Marchionne told The Canadian Press that Brampton Assembly, home of the Challenger, Charger and 300C, and Windsor Assembly, which makes minivans, are both efficient plants that produce high-quality products.
