While pursuing the elusive ex-cop '06 Hemi Charger online, I found some interesting vintage police-model Mopars that are project ready.
They're all listed on eBay right now...do a search for "police" in eBay Motors/Cars & trucks, and you'll see these listed under Dodge and Plymouth.
First up is this ex-Virginia State Police '76 Plymouth Gran Fury. Bet that some of you don't know/remember what the front of Plymouth's last C-Body looked like! (BTW, '76 & '77 C-Bodies are identical, except for the year codes on the VIN and fender tags.) Under the hood--a rebuilt 440, backed by a 727 and 8 3/4-inch rear end.
Inside, the 140-mph cop speedometer's still there, plus another one's included in the extra parts that go with the car. You may want to check with Legendary or SMS for repro seat cloth, as the front bench shows plenty of patrol usage.
The body's in surprisingly good shape, and it's had one repaint in its OEM blue after it was taken out of police service. (When new, Virginia painted the sides & wheels gray--then re-repainted the cars blue before selling them.)
Other pics with the eBay listing show where minor rust fixes on the door bottoms, quarters and trunk lid are needed.
It's up for bid right now, so as they say on TV....it could be yours IF the price is right!
Also on eBay is this '74 Dodge Coronet with the cop package, listed by a seller in Arizona who'd listed it before Christmas. It's back with a "Buy It Now" price of $2,000.
It's had one repaint since it was taken out of police service, and the Arizona sun has pretty much toasted that second paint job. (Come to think of it, Turbine Bronze wouldn't look too bad on here, once the needed body prep's done.) Also, notice the lack of rust--it's an original California car that found its second home in Arizona, IIRC.
That 360 under the hood could be a rebuild candidate for use here, or swapped out and replaced by a 400, a 440, or....
If you keep the stock seats, you may want to vacuum out the donut crumbs. And put some new seat/shoulder belts in, because these seats offer NO lateral support. (And make for damn sure that totally-worthless, '74-only seat belt/starter interlock is disconnected!)
Don't mind the dash pad...places like Just Dashes can restore it. That's a certified-calibration 120-mph cop speedometer in the dash, btw.
Check out that trunk...have you seen one in a B-Body of that vintage with that little rust in it? Again, this ex-cop '74 Coronet's at a "Buy It Now" price of two grand...ready for restoration, restification, or what-have-you.
Also also on eBay, there's also an '80 Volare sedan with the cop package, California-style (318/727--the E58 360 was NA in California, thanks to the state's emissions laws...which the cops who were there then really "appreciated" because of the slow cars they were stuck with as a result!) It's got little-to-no rust, runs, and its second paint job is peeling off. (The photos posted with the listing are really small ones, so see the listing, or contact the seller yourself.) The seller is in Benicia, California...on the north/east corner of the SF Bay Area, just down the road from my old stomping grounds.
There you go, if you're inclined to do one of these ex-squads as a project!
