Removing Mopar Lug Nuts

Lug Nuts

Ever have a problem taking the lug nuts off your Mopar's wheels?

Back in the old days, before cable tv and stuff, the Chrysler Corporation did a silly thing. They put lug nuts on one side of the car that had reverse threads. That means if you use the "righty tighty, lefty loosy" method, you'll take the lug nuts off one side of your Mopar, but on the other side you'll just make them tighter. If you tighten them enough they'll still come off, but the studs will be broken and you won't be able to put the wheel back on until you replace them.

If you look at the end of the stud, the ones with reverse threads are usually marked with an L for Left handed threads. If they are, then you need to turn them like you're tightening them to loosen them. Usually, these type of lug nuts are on the driver side of the car, but we've seen them on both sides of some cars. Also, Chrysler stopped doing this around 1970, but some cars after that still had backward lug nuts. I guess dealerships had both kinds and if a car needed the studs replaced some guy at the dealer sometimes put the wrong ones on the car.

If your car has backwards lug nuts, we recommend replacing them.
